Hawthorn has produced some magic in its return to Big V and Youth League, with two wins on the board already for the Men and a staggering 4 and 1 record for the Women in 2025. After thrilling season openers at the brand new venue Swinburne Senior Secondary College Sports Centre, the Magic have put themselves in an exciting position with the door wide open for intriguing and enticing development opportunities.
In the Magic Men’s most recent game, they came up just short in a down to the wire matchup with Warrandyte. Every quarter saw single-digit differences, with the Venom just edging out Hawthorn at the Swinburne College Sports Centre, 74-78. The hosts boasted a deep performance, with four players in double figures, including Eden Horowitz with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. The loss marked a three game losing streak, but the attitude and mindset remains positive as the team continues to learn more every week.
Horowitz has been sound defensively, currently leading the entire competition in blocks per game at over one and a half per contest. The more promising signs lie in the results, with every loss decided by a margin of less than 10, putting the competitiveness on full display.
Hawthorn’s Women have had a tremendous beginning to their 2025 campaign having dropped only 1 of their 5 games, most recently to Warrandyte. After taking down the reigning Champions Bellarine back in Round 4 with Alana Poulton filling the stat sheet with 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and 6 steals, the Magic Women fell ever so short to the Venom before the Easter break. Sitting a comfortable 4th on the Youth Two Ladder, the Magic return in Round 6 away from home against Darebin. With Poulton leading the charge averaging a 16.2 and 12.2 double double, this group has already shown great resilience
The depth of these teams makes them a difficult opponent on any given night, with an outstanding number of contributors across the board in various stats. Their home crowds have been staggering and filled with energy as they showcase their talent in new threads.
Alongside Darebin, the two new faces to the landscape bring a fresh aspect of mystery and excitement, with all other clubs going in blind for scouting. As the season progresses and Hawthorn continue to find their feet, they will become a force to be reckoned with some finals time. The Magic’s story this season is not just one of hope, but rather a headline marked with the goal of immediate contention and making the club heard.
