In the lead-up to the 2025 Under 12 Junior Country Championships (JCC), 59 referees and 23 referee coaches from across regional Victoria gathered for an intensive training clinic aimed at preparing officials for the tournament.
Held on Thursday afternoon, 10 April 2025, the three-hour clinic focused on sharpening on-court skills and building connections between referees and coaches. Under the expert guidance of Pam Brasher, an NBL1 South referee coach from Maffra, participants worked through key areas including:
- Areas of Responsibility
- Transition Movement
- Signalling to the Bench
- Jump Ball Mechanics
- Lead and Trail Mechanics
“This was the first time we brought all the officials in prior to the event,” said Jordan, Basketball Victoria’s Regional Program Development Coordinator. “It was great to see all our young aspiring officials working on their skills and meeting new friends. It was a huge success, which was evident when they all took court on the first day, implementing the learnings we discussed at the camp.”
The clinic not only focused on technical skills but also encouraged teamwork and camaraderie - essential qualities for a smooth and professional tournament environment.
Sarah, Basketball Victoria Technical Official State Program Development Manager, echoed the sentiment, “The camp provided our referees with a fantastic opportunity to practice their positioning and skills in a low-intensity environment. Pam and all the referee coaches provided invaluable feedback throughout the clinic, which will help set the team up for success over the championship.”
Basketball Victoria is proud to support referee development at all levels and acknowledges the dedication of everyone involved in making this clinic a success.
