Victorian basketball has lost a legend of the community, Noel Byers.
Noel will best be remembered as a dedicated and passionate official across many levels of Victorian basketball for over 60 years. His inspirational dedication to the craft saw him become one of the most experienced and committed referee coaches in our history. His passion to mentor, educate and inspire Victorian officials, saw him serve on the Victorian Basketball Referees Association (VBRA) Board (now known as the Technical Officials Commission - TOC) as the Country representative for 13 years and was president of the VBRA for another 11 years.
He received many accolades including, being awarded the prestigious Jack Terrill Medal, being inducted as a Life Member of the VBRA/TOC and the Morwell Basketball Association and having the Country Award for most Outstanding Referee Development Program in a small association.
We pass our condolences to his family and friends.
Noel recorded an interview on his retirement from officiating, which can be seen here.
