Basketball Victoria congratulates five standout Victorians named in the squad of 60 athletes from 15 countries set to participate in the 14th edition of Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia. The prestigious camp will be held from Thursday, September 19 to Sunday September 22 at Warwick Stadium in Western Australia, as part of the inaugural Hoopsfest.
The five Victorians selected are:
- Harrison Beauchamp
- Henry Sewell
- Sa Pilimai
- Mading Kuany
- Marcus Vaughns
These athletes have enjoyed huge seasons on court, representing their state and country at the highest levels. All five were key contributors to the Under-18 Victorian teams, with the Metro team claiming the national title in April and Pilimai helping the Country team to secure bronze.
Beauchamp, Sewell, Pilimai, and Kuany were also part of the Under-17 Australian team that competed in FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup in Turkey earlier this year. Their success continued in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL), where Beauchamp and Sewell faced off in the recent Under-18 VJBL VC Grand Final, with Sewell’s Dandenong Rangers coming out on top.
The BWB Asia camp, conducted in partnership with the NBA, NBL, and FIBA, offers young athletes a unique opportunity to develop under the guidance of top coaches and players. Participants will engage in a range of activities, including movement efficiency drills, skill stations, scrimmages, and leadership development sessions. The camp will conclude with a ceremony recognising standout performers, including awards such as the Kim Bohuny Camp MVP, the Patrick Baumann Sportsmanship Award, and the Defensive MVP.
This year’s camp is extra special, as it coincides with the inaugural Hoopsfest in Perth. NBA champion Aron Baynes and four-time WNBA champion Cynthia Cooper will lead the camp’s coaching efforts, adding an extra layer of expertise and inspiration for the athletes.
The BWB program has a proven track record of success, with 127 former participants advancing to the NBA or WNBA. Since its inception in 2001, BWB has reached over 4,500 athletes from 142 countries, hosting 77 camps in 51 cities, across 33 countries on six continents. BWB Asia was previously held in Australia in 2016 (Melbourne) and 2022 (Canberra), the latter at the NBA Global Academy.
For these five Victorian athletes, participation in the BWB Asia camp is another significant steppingstone in their promising basketball careers.
