The depth of eager Victorian coaches is once again on display, with 25 Victorian mentees and five mentors selected to take part in Basketball Australia’s Community Coach Mentoring Program (CCMP) which is now in its third consecutive year.
This year, the program attracted huge interest, with over 330 expressions of interest from aspiring mentees and 90 applications from experienced coaches eager to serve as mentors. After a thorough selection process, 45 mentees—comprising 25 men and 20 women—were chosen, along with 15 mentors, including 11 men and four women.
Breaking down the statistics further, the program includes 45 total mentees nationwide, with 25 coming from Victoria (14 women and 11 men). Among the 15 total mentors nationwide, five are from Victoria, including three women and two men. Notably, of the four women mentors in the program, three are from Victoria.
The CCMP aims to bridge the gap between grassroots and high-performance coaching. The program provides mentees the invaluable opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced and respected figures in Australian basketball. Meanwhile, mentors play a crucial role in fostering the growth of the sport by sharing their expertise and insights.
The program focuses on essential aspects of coaching, including leadership, technical skills, and the development of a coaching philosophy. These components are vital for success in the competitive basketball landscape, equipping participants with the necessary tools to excel in their coaching careers.
Rob Coulter, Coach Education Manager Basketball Victoria, shared his thoughts on the program, stating, "It’s fantastic to see so many enthusiastic and passionate Victorian coaches being part of the program, in both the Mentor and Mentee space. With Mentors that have been involved with National teams, leaders of programs, former players and grassroots coaches, the Mentees will gain great insight and support with generous sharing and learning available to all involved. This is a great opportunity for coaches to upskill and is a worthwhile initiative from Basketball Australia to help grow coaches and enhance their coaching network."
